Local government in the North East of England is led by several combined authorities, similar to city regions elsewhere in the UK. These combined authorities are responsible for local strategic decision-making on economic development, transport, skills and health issues.

The most important of these combined authorities is the Newcastle upon Tyne Combined Authority, which covers much of Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead, as well as other smaller towns such as North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland. The structure of this authority has changed since its inception in 2017: it now includes representatives from both local councils and community groups.
