As from 8 November 2005 uninsured drivers risk having their cars seized and destroyed.
Across the country police will use automatic number plate recognition cameras linked to a central database. This contains details of all vehicles registered in the UK which are believed to be uninsured.
It is estimated that motorists pay on average an extra £30 per year because of uninsured drivers. There is also evidence to suggest that up to 10% of vehicles on our roads are being used illegally and with many of these driving without insurance.
Mark Burdett of Northern Counties (the Gateshead based Insurance Broker) had this to say about the new police scheme, “We provide Motor Insurance to individuals and companies and for far too long law abiding motorists have been penalised through the actions of uninsured drivers. I’m sure this news is welcomed by everyone who is fed up with having to pay for the actions of these anti-social drivers.”
